Passing of former President of the Republic of Haiti, René Préval

It is with sorrow that the Brazilian Government has learned of the passing of the former President of the Republic of Haiti, René Préval, on March 3rd.

Former President René Préval played a key role in the consolidation of democracy in Haiti. He has governed the country for two full terms, between 1996 and 2001, and between 2006 and 2011. He led the country at a time of great hardship, with the 2010 earthquake, which caused tens of thousands of fatalities.

The Brazilian Government stands in solidarity with the people and Government of Haiti, and presents its heartfelt condolences to the family of René Préval.
