PRESS RELEASE NO. 72
Congratulations to the New President of the African Union and the President of the African Union Commission
The Brazilian Government welcomes the selection of João Lourenço, President of Angola, as this year’s rotating Chairperson of the African Union, as well as Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti, as Chairperson of the African Union Commission for the 2025–2028 term. These appointments were formalized at the 38th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), held on February 15 in Addis Ababa.
While wishing them success in their new roles, the Brazilian Government reaffirms its commitment to further strengthening its partnership with the African Union and with African countries. Brazil and Africa share deep historical and cultural ties, as well as a common commitment to fighting hunger and promoting social justice and sustainable development.
Brazil and the African Union have been working together within the framework of the G20 on issues of interest to the Global South, such as climate change, external debt, and the reform of international institutions.
Established in 2002, the African Union (AU) succeeded the Organization of African Unity, founded on May 25, 1963. Guided by the values of independence, unity, peace, and cooperation that inspired its predecessor, the AU seeks to promote African solutions to the challenges faced by African countries, aiming to strengthen peace, sovereignty, and socioeconomic development across the continent.
