PRESS RELEASE N. 148
Conflict in Ethiopia
Brazil follows with concern the recent developments in Ethiopia, with possible implications for both peace and security at regional and international levels. The Brazilian government reiterates the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the beginning of an inclusive national dialogue, with a view to finding a lasting political solution to the conflict.
Brazil supports the United Nations Security Council press statement on November 5, 2021, and the African Union Peace and Security Council statement, and congratulates the dialogue and agreement efforts led by African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.
The Brazilian government urges all parties to respect human rights of the people, adopt all necessary measures to protect civilians and to fully meet their obligations in line with international humanitarian law, including to guarantee unrestricted access to humanitarian aid.
The Embassy of Brazil in Adis Abeba is in permanent contact with the Brazilian community in Ethiopia, and is providing them consular assistance, including the issuance of travel documents.
The Brazilian Consular Portal has made available recommendations for Brazilians traveling or residing in Ethiopia. In particular, it is recommended that non-essential travel to Ethiopia be avoided and that residents in that country keep their contact information updated in the Embassy and follow the contingency plan disclosed to the community.
