Chile opens its market for fresh Brazilian papaya – Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and Ministry of Foreign Affairs joint press release
Brazil and Chile have concluded the process to open the Chilean market to fresh papaya (Carica papaya) for consumption, following a review of certificates and on-site audits that supported the analysis and the establishment of phytosanitary requirements.
Brazil ranks 2nd among the world's leading papaya exporters. Last year, our exports reached $49.71 million, accounting for 15.3% of the global trade in the product.
Chilean consumption of papaya is estimated to increase in the next few years, along with a growing Chilean demand for other tropical fruits. In 2022, Chile imported nearly $326 million in fruit and Brazil was its 4th largest supplier.
This positive outcome is the result of a close coordination between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).
