On 5 May, the Itamaraty Palace hosted an event to present the candidacy of Mr Fabio de Sá e Silva for a seat on the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for the 2026–2029 term.
A holder of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Law and a PhD in Law, Politics and Society, Mr Sá e Silva possesses extensive experience in the public sector and in designing and implementing institutional reforms in the fields of human rights, justice, security, citizenship, and democratic governance.
He is a professor and researcher, with previous positions at the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea), the University of Oklahoma, the Center on the Legal Profession at Harvard Law School, and several international organisations, including the IACHR itself.
Mr Sá e Silva was selected by the Brazilian Government to contest one of the three vacancies on the Commission in recognition of his exemplary record in the defence of human rights. Brazil is confident that he will make a substantive contribution to the Commission’s work, fostering constructive dialogue and cooperation within the Inter-American Human Rights System.
The election will take place during the 55th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), to be held in Antigua and Barbuda from 25 to 27 June 2025.
