Brazil's Participation in the Summit of the Future

The Summit of the Future, a meeting of heads of state and government convened by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, opened today, September 22, in New York. On the occasion, a Pact for the Future was adopted, establishing principles and commitments of UN members states toward a renewed multilateralism and international cooperation.

The Pact addresses topics such as sustainable development; human rights; international peace and security; science, technology and digital cooperation; youth and future generations; and global governance reform. The Declaration on Future Generations and the Global Digital Compact, annexed to the Pact,  were also adopted.

Brazil actively engaged in the negotiation processes and sought to include ambitious commitments in the Pact, in particular on sustainable development and the fight against poverty in the world, as well as on global governance reform.

In his speech at the Summit of the Future, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emphasized that the meeting reflects the interest of Member States in transforming the United Nations so that it can effectively contribute to international peace and security, human rights and sustainable development.

The President of Brazil underscored the urgent need to reform the United Nations and the Bretton Woods institutions. The upcoming 80th anniversary of the UN, in 2025, is a warning of the urgent need to adopt the commitments made today. In the context of its G20 presidency, Brazil gives a new momentum to global governance reform, which will include the launch of a Call to Action, to be formally adopted at the G20 Ministerial Meeting, to be held on September 25th.
