Brazil's Participation in the 78th United Nations General Assembly

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will embark on a working visit to New York from September 16 to 21 to lead the Brazilian delegation at the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

On September 19, President Lula will deliver the opening speech to the General Debate of the General Assembly. As is tradition, Brazil will be the first country to take the floor during the General Debate. The opening of the General Assembly is the moment when world leaders from 193 countries come together to discuss the key global challenges.

The President will hold meetings with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres; the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus; and Heads of State and government from other countries.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mauro Vieira, will participate in meetings with counterparts from various countries and in events of groups of which Brazil is a part, such as BRICS, IBAS, MERCOSUL, G4, and the South American Foreign Ministers Contact Group.

The main theme of the 78th session of the General Assembly will be "Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all."
