Brazil's Participation in Ceremonies Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Coup in Chile
Today, September 11th, marks the 50th anniversary of the coup in Chile against then-President Salvador Allende, an event that ushered in the military dictatorship that would last until 1990 in that country. The date will be commemorated in events taking place in Santiago on the 10th and 11th, with Chilean President Gabriel Boric serving as the host.
President Lula has designated the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, and the Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Silvio Almeida, to represent him in Santiago.
As part of measures for remembrance and justice regarding the tragic date and the thousands of deaths and torture victims during Augusto Pinochet's dictatorial regime, plaques will be inaugurated on September 12th in homage to the significant Brazilian community exiled in Chile before the coup and to the Brazilian victims of human rights violations by the Chilean dictatorship. The plaques will be installed in Brazil Square in Santiago, as well as at the Brazilian Embassy, once the ongoing renovation of the building is completed. The unveiling of the plaques will be attended by a significant group of former Brazilian exiles in Chile, who are traveling to the country at their own expense to honor the nation that welcomed them in the past. This initiative results from collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship.
Additionally, on September 10th, the photographic exhibition "Evandro Teixeira. Chile 1973" was inaugurated at the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. The exhibition, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture in partnership with the Moreira Salles Institute, brings together historical images captured by the Brazilian photojournalist, one of the few foreign journalists allowed into Chile shortly after September 11, 1973.
