Brazilian sites inscripted on the Enhanced Protection List of the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict

The Brazilian government welcomed the news that the Memorial of Resistance (São Paulo) and the Real Forte Príncipe da Beira (Rondônia) were inscripted on the Enhanced Protection List of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. The inscription was approved during the meeting of the Convention Committee held on December 4 at UNESCO headquarters. This marks the first inscription of Brazilian sites on the List.

The Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict is UNESCO’s longest-standing convention dedicated to the protection of cultural heritage and the main international treaty on the subject during conflicts and instability. The instrument sets standards to preserve and safeguard historic sites, museums, archives, and monuments, preventing destruction, looting and military misuse, and promotes international cooperation to protect humanity’s cultural heritage even in conflict situations.

Established in 1999, the Enhanced Protection List of the 1954 Convention provides international recognition and additional legal protection to cultural property of exceptional value to humanity and encourages the adoption of preventive policies and measures aimed at heritage conservation in risk situations.

The approval of these nominations reaffirms Brazil’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage, promoting historical memory and strengthening culture as a tool for peace, cooperation and understanding among peoples.
