PRESS RELEASE N. 150
Brazil is elected in three multilateral organizations
The Brazilian government congratulates professor George Rodrigo Bandeira Galindo on his election as member of the United Nations International Law Commission.
The election of professor Galindo is Brazil’s third victory in multilateral organizations this week, when Dr. Rodrigo Mudrovitsch and Ambassador Santiago Mourão were elected to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Presidency of UNESCO General Conference, respectively.
The election to the International Law Commission was held today within the scope of the 76th United Nations General Assembly, in New York. With 166 votes, the Brazilian candidate was among those who received the most votes in the group of Latin American and Caribbean countries, thus reflecting the recognition of the high level of his skills and Brazil’s contributions to International Law.
Professor Galindo has served as law advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2016 and is a member of the Inter-American Juridical Committee. He will serve the 2023-2027 term at the International Law Commission.
The United Nations International Law Commission is the subsidiary organ of the UN General Assembly in charge of the codification and progressive development of international law. Its works led to the preparation of important treaties to which Brazil is a party, including the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations; the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations; and the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties.
Brazil has been almost continuously a member of the Commission since its establishment in the 1940s.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates its congratulations to the Brazilians elected and wishes them success in their new duties.
