PRESS RELEASE N. 447
Brazil elected to the Human Rights Council (HRC)
Today, October 10, Brazil was elected to the Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2024-2026 term, with 144 votes. The Brazilian government expresses its gratitude to all United Nation members for their support during the election that took place at the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in New York.
The significant vote count reflects the international community’s recognition of Brazil´s commitment to promoting and protecting human right, both at the national and international levels, and of its role in defending peace, sustainable development and democracy.
During its new mandate, Brazil will work towards a more efficient Human Rights Council and will seek to strenghten the body’s role in preventing and addressing the structural causes of serious human rights violations, with an emphasis on constructive dialogue and international cooperation.
Established in 2006 and based in Geneva, the UNHRC is the primary United Nations body dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights. Brazil has traditionally been a part of the UNHRC and will commence its sixth term on January 1, 2024.
