As part of his official agenda during the external engagement segment of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will hold a bilateral meeting with Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Saturday, May 20, on the sidelines of the event. The meeting follows a telephone conversation held between the two leaders on April 6.
During the bilateral meeting, President Lula will address issues including the expansion of bilateral trade and investment flows, cooperation in the area of decarbonization, and the integration of the Brazilian community in Japan, which is estimated at around 204,000 individuals, making the fifth largest worldwide. The leaders will also address international matters such as peace and security, as well as the fight against climate change.
The traditional partnership between Brazil and Japan is strengthened by historic human bonds. Brazil is home to the largest community of Japanese descendants outside Japan, consisting of more than 2 million people. In 2023, the 115th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil will be commemorated.
In 2022, bilateral trade reached US$ 11.9 billion, resulting in a surplus of US$ 1.3 billion for Brazil. Additionally, Japan is an important source of direct investments in Brazil, with a stock valued at US$ 22.8 billion.
