Bicentenary of relations between Brazil and the Holy See
Brazil and the Holy See will celebrate, on January 23, 2026, two hundred years of diplomatic relations.
On that date, Minister Mauro Vieira will attend a solemn mass in Rome, celebrated by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. During his visit to Rome, Minister Vieira will also hold meetings with Cardinal Parolin, with the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra’ John Dunlap, and with the leadership of the Community of Sant’Egidio.
To mark the bicentenary of relations between Brazil and the Holy See, the Brazilian government is organizing an extensive program of cultural activities in Rome, including exhibitions, musical and audiovisual performances, academic seminars, and the publication of commemorative works.
Relations between Brazil and the Holy See are marked by a significant level of convergence on a range of issues of the international agenda, such as peace and security, the fight against hunger and poverty, and sustainable development. High-level political dialogue has been regular and conducted in a cordial manner. In his current term, President Lula has held meetings with both Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV. Brazil is home to the world’s largest Catholic population and to the largest episcopate of the Catholic Church.
