Assassination of presidential candidate in Ecuador

The Brazilian government has learned with profound dismay of the assassination that took place this afternoon on August 9th in Quito of Fernando Villavicencio, a candidate in the presidential elections in Ecuador.

While expressing the belief that those responsible for this deplorable act will be identified and brought to justice, the Brazilian government extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the presidential candidate and to the government and people of Ecuador.
