Appointment of Dr. Florisvaldo Fier as Mercosur High Representative-General
The Common Market Council (CMC) formalized yesterday, February 25, the appointment of Dr. Florisvaldo Fier for the position of High Representative-General of MERCOSUR. Dr. Florisvaldo Fier was appointed to complete the term of Mr. Ivan Ramalho, who, in his turn was appointed Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC). The term ends on January 31, 2017.
Doctor of medicine, specialized in public health, Dr. Florisvaldo Fier exercised, among other elective positions, four terms as Congressman, from 1998 to 2015. As member of the Brazilian Representation for the MERCOSUR Parliament, he held the Presidency of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (2003-2005) and the Presidency of the MERCOSUR Parliament (2008-2009).
The High Representative-General of MERCOSUR holds the tasks of political articulation, formulation of proposals, and representation of the common positions of the bloc. He works with areas such as health, education, culture and promotion of MERCOSUR. He will also coordinate the implementation of the goals established in the Plan of Action for the Statute of MERCOSUR Citizenship, adopted at the Summit in Foz do Iguaçu, in 2010.
