PRESS RELEASE N. 223
Aggravation of the humanitarian situation in Sudan
The Brazilian government is monitoring with concern the ongoing conflict in Sudan and the worsening humanitarian situation in country. The deterioration of food security indicators, forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and the death of hundreds of civilians, including children, such as those registered in an orphanage in Khartoum in the last six weeks, are sources of great apprehension.
While deeply lamenting these deaths, Brazil condemns the attacks on the civilian population and the country's infrastructure. It urges the parties to reinstate the ceasefire agreed upon on May 29 and to maintain dialogue to bring an end to the conflict. The Brazilian government calls on the parties to respect international humanitarian law and to guarantee unhindered access for humanitarian assistance.
The Brazilian government reiterates its support for the efforts of the African Union and its Peace and Security Council, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Arab League, the United Nations and its Security Council, as well as the countries involved in the Jeddah Process, in favor of a political and diplomatic solution to the crisis.
Brazil urges the Sudanese leaderships to resume political negotiations with the aim of reestablishing a transitional civilian government.
