PRESS RELEASE N. 179
30th anniversary of first democratic elections in South Africa
On this April 27th, the Brazilian government congratulates the people and government of South Africa on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the first democratic elections in 1994. At that historic moment, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nelson Mandela, symbol of the fight against the apartheid, was elected President of the Republic. Three decades later, the struggle of the South African people for democracy, social justice and the end of racism still resonates strongly throughout the world.
As we recall the 7th meeting of the Brazil-South Africa Joint Commission, held in Brasília on April 23 and co-chaired by Minister Mauro Vieira and foreign minister Naledi Pandor, Brazil joins South Africa in celebration of this historic milestone for humankind.
