14th BRICS Summit
The 14th BRICS Summit was held on June 23-24, in virtual format, under the rotating presidency of China, with the theme " Forging High-quality Partnership for a New Era of Global Development."
On the 23rd, Presidents Jair Bolsonaro, from Brazil, Xi Jinping, from China, Cyril Ramaphosa, from South Africa, Narendra Modi, from India, and Vladimir Putin, from Russia, discussed topics such as global governance, combating the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, sustainable development, intra-BRICS cooperation and institutional improvement of the group. They also approved the Final Declaration of the meeting.
President Jair Bolsonaro emphasized the importance that Brazil attaches to the BRICS as a forum for dialogue and cooperation, which reinforces the relevance of multilateralism and a fairer and more inclusive international order. He reiterated Brazil's vision that the BRICS should guide its partnership towards sustainable development and concrete results that generate benefits for all.
Leaders expressed satisfaction with the results of intra-BRICS cooperation, which resulted, earlier this year, in the launch of the BRICS Vaccine Research and Development Center, and reinforced advances in the areas of economy, finance and trade; health and vaccines; fight against terrorism and transnational crimes; and science, technology and innovation.
They also addressed the situation in Ukraine and recalled their national positions on the subject, as defended in relevant United Nations forums. Brazil defended the peaceful and negotiated solution to the conflict, called for an urgent search for a solution to the humanitarian crisis and stressed the need to respect international law and the principles of the UN Charter.
On the 24th, the Vice-President of the Republic, Hamilton Mourão, represented Brazil at the "High Level Dialogue on Global Development", an initiative aimed at expanding the BRICS dialogue with other developing countries and demonstrating the group's vocation to strengthen the role of emerging economies in global governance. Invited by the Chinese turn presidency, the leaders of Algeria, Argentina, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Fiji, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Senegal, Thailand, and Uzbekistan participated in this segment.
