The tree that gave our country his name has an official day—Brazilwood Day—on May 3 (Law No. 6,607/78). To celebrate the occasion, the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden is hosting the Brazilwood Walk at the Arboretum on Monday, May 4, at 10 a.m. Researchers Claudia Barros, Haroldo Lima, Patricia da Rosa, Marcus Nadruz, and José Diniz have organized an activity to immerse participants in the history, diversity, and conservation of this species.
The JBRJ Arboretum contains 79 Brazilwood trees in 24 beds that make up this living biological collection. During the tour, the public will be shown trees of different ages, with different histories and reasons for planting, as well as specimens with different shapes. The public will also receive information about the history of Brazil and the role of the brazilwood tree in the historical formation of the country and the Atlantic Forest, its morphological and genetic diversity, its uses, conservation efforts, and the species’ current conservation status.
This Walk is a special opportunity for visitors to stay up to date with the most advanced scientific knowledge about the species while enjoying the beauty of the Botanical Garden Arboretum.
