The giant trees of Rio's Botanical Garden on a guided trail
Giant trees are the theme of the Trilhas de Sexta series on October 10 and 17 at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. The guided tour presents the largest plants in the arboretum, all over 25 meters tall. The largest of them, an African mahogany (Khaya senegalensis), is 49.1 meters tall, equivalent to a 16-story building. It is closely followed by one of the Garden's famous imperial palms (Roystonea oleracea), at 48.1 meters.
Giant trees play an important ecological role in forests. Several species of plants and animals survive on their immense branches, as a result of the specific microclimate that involves humidity and light. They also serve as shelters and support for nests.
The Giant Tree Trail starts at 10 a.m. and is free of charge. There is only an entrance fee for the arboretum.
