From September 25 to 30 (Thursday to Tuesday), the Botanical Garden celebrates Cerrado Week, with activities that combine art, science, and education to raise public awareness about the importance of this biome, whose biodiversity is one of the most threatened in the country.

Storytelling - The program begins with storytelling about the Cerrado for children on Thursday, September 25, at 2 p.m. The meeting point is the Visitor Center, and storytelling takes place in the pergola near Lake Frei Leandro or, in case of rain, in the Galpão das Artes. This activity is carried out by Salvatore and sponsored by Light.

Environmental education - The JBRJ Environmental Education Service (SEA) is promoting the activity Getting to Know the Biodiversity of the Cerrado on September 25, 26, 29, and 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., for scheduled schools. In addition to a roundtable discussion about the biome and its diversity, children will participate in the “Interactive Cerrado Biodiversity Roulette” activity, exploring the ecological relationships in this region. Finally, everyone will be able to try pequi brigadeiro, a typical fruit that represents the culture of the Brazilian Midwest.

Puppet Theater - On Sunday, the 28th, the Papa Vento Puppet Theater Company will present the story “O Tesouro do Cerrado” (The Treasure of the Cerrado) at 10 a.m. in the Children's Playground. The Maned Wolf, along with his friends from the savanna, face difficulties due to deforestation and the advance of plantations. They discover that a greedy farmer, who only thinks about getting rich, has a map to a treasure. Together, they manage to secretly take the map and embark on a great adventure.

Roundtable discussion with readings from Grande Sertão Veredas - Actor Gilson de Barros and researcher Domingos Cardoso (JBRJ) are the guests of the Cultivando Ideias roundtable discussion on Tuesday, September 30, at 2:30 p.m., at the Botanical Garden Museum, bringing the week's program to a grand finale. In conjunction with the program for Rio, World Book Capital, this roundtable discussion features a dramatized reading of excerpts from the book Grande Sertão: Veredas, by Guimarães Rosa, and knowledge resulting from scientific research on the biome. Admission to the Museum is free and no registration is required. Seating: 50, on a first-come, first-served basis.
