The Botanical Garden Museum is hosting a SESI Lab exhibition on the Amazon and its bioeconomy
Starting on June 4, 2026, the Botanical Garden Museum will host the exhibition “Amazonian BioOCAnomy,” conceived by SESI Lab and making its debut in Rio de Janeiro, which invites the public to immerse themselves in an experience exploring bioeconomics, biodiversity, innovation, and environmental conservation. The exhibition’s opening, during the Corpus Christi state holiday weekend, is part of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden’s 2026 Environment Week program. Admission to the Museum is free.
The exhibition highlights the potential of the bioeconomy as a strategy for the sustainable development of the various Amazon regions, linking biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation through five thematic areas: “The Forest and the World”; “Amazonian Knowledge”; “Bioeconomy”; “Industry and Innovation”; “Forest Rights.”
The entire exhibition design was developed using sustainable materials, such as recycled plastic sheets and byproducts from agribusiness, science, technology, and the appreciation of intergenerational knowledge. The initiative is part of an effort by the Industry System and its partners to present solutions to the public based on nature conservation, supported by innovation and sustainable production practices.
Right at the entrance, visitors are invited to reflect on the Amazon as a contested biome—one that is fundamental to global climate balance and deeply impacted by challenges such as deforestation, wildfires, mining, growing inequality, and climate change. From there, the exhibition unfolds through various immersive environments that bring together science, biodiversity, culture, and innovation.
“One of the Botanical Garden Museum’s missions is to promote reflection on biodiversity, conservation, and the future. Hosting ‘Amazonian BioOCAnomy’ reinforces this commitment by bringing the public closer to urgent debates on sustainable development and the appreciation of traditional knowledge, through a sensory, educational, and accessible experience,” says Grazielle Giacomo, technical manager of the Botanical Garden Museum.
For SESI’s superintendent of culture, Cláudia Ramalho, the exhibition’s arrival in Rio de Janeiro represents an important milestone in the expansion of SESI Lab’s initiatives. “Bringing an exhibition that addresses the bioeconomy to other regions broadens the scope of fundamental discussions on sustainable development, science, innovation, and environmental preservation,” she explains.
The exhibition was developed by a curatorial committee composed of expert consultants and scientists from universities in Amazonas and Pará, with the participation of the Amazonia+21 Institute, the SENAI Institutes of Innovation, and the Executive Office for the Environment and Sustainability of the National Confederation of Industry (CNI). The touring exhibition also received funding from the Federal Culture Incentive Law.
The exhibition in Rio de Janeiro is part of the SESI Lab Itinerante project, created to expand access to the museum’s exhibitions and educational activities across different regions of the country. The initiative is based on the idea of bringing the museum closer to new audiences and promoting knowledge exchange through cultural and educational experiences.
SESI Lab is an interactive museum that connects art, science, and technology, open to all audiences in Brasília. The space brings together permanent and temporary exhibitions, festivals, workshops, film screenings, artist residencies, and activities related to the maker culture, always with a focus on educational, creative, and innovative experiences. Housed in a building designed by Oscar Niemeyer, in the heart of the federal capital, SESI Lab serves as a hub for the democratic dissemination of knowledge, bringing science, culture, and technology to audiences from different regions of the country.
