The Blackness in Focus Forum, held at the Botanical Garden Museum, discusses climate justice and coloniality in its 9th edition
On Monday, June 1, at 2:00 p.m., in the Multipurpose Room of the Botanical Garden Museum, the 9th edition of the Blackness in Focus Forum will take place, with the theme “Environmental Management and Coloniality.” Free and open to the public, the event is part of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden’s Environment Week program, bringing together professor and quilombo leader Bia Nunes and ICMBio environmental analyst Ana Carolina Barradas. The discussion will be moderated by Lucas Lopes, a staff member of the JBRJ Environmental Education Service (SEA), and the event will also be streamed live on the JBRJ YouTube channel.
The lecture invites reflection on the connections between the environment, memory, identity, and resistance, highlighting the leading role of quilombola communities and traditional peoples in developing practices for caring for the land and conserving biodiversity. In dialogue with science and public environmental management, the event broadens the debate on climate justice and pathways toward more diverse and inclusive action in environmental policies.
Drawing on their diverse backgrounds and experiences, the guests will address topics related to ancestry, territorial management, nature conservation, and the fight against socio-environmental inequalities. The Forum thus offers a space for listening and exchange, bringing together academic knowledge, community experiences, and traditional practices.
