Tea ceremony and musical concerts return to Casa Pacheco Leão
The Tea Ceremony and The Guanabarinos
The Tea Ceremony and musical concerts are back at Casa Pacheco Leão, in Rio de Janeiro's Botanical Garden, in January, February, and March. The Tea Ceremony, which presents tea preparation according to Chinese tradition followed by tasting, always takes place on the last Friday of the month, in two sessions, at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. In January, the event will be held on the 30th. There are only 20 participants in each session.
The ceremony is conducted by Professor Li Lu and accompanied by music by Professor Gao Chunhan, who plays the Chinese string instrument pipa. The attraction is free. No ticket is required for the arboretum. Free tickets can be obtained at jbrj.eleventickets.com
The musical concerts take place on the last Saturday of the month, with two performances, at 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. In January, the recital will be on the 31st, with the group Os Guanabarinos. Formed by JJ Simões (trumpet), Felipe Rosa (mandolin), and Igor Lazier (7-string guitar), the trio has its roots in choro. The repertoire includes classics by Jacob do Bandolim, Pixinguinha, and Bonfiglio de Oliveira, as well as works by contemporary composers such as Maurício Carrilho and Cristóvão Bastos, and original compositions. The formation, improvisations, and interpretation guarantee a rich and engaging sound experience.
The concerts are free and held outdoors on the Casa's balcony. No ticket is required to enter the arboretum. In case of rain, the recital will be canceled.
At Casa Pacheco Leão, the public can also visit the exhibition “Tea Route - Botany, Culture, and Tradition,” which offers an immersion in the history of tea, exploring its origins, its trajectory around the world, and its role in connecting cultures, especially between Brazil and China. The collection brings together more than 100 pieces from different eras, styles, and origins. Casa Pacheco Leão is one of the most emblematic historic buildings in the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. Listed by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), it was reopened to the public in 2024, after undergoing architectural restoration and hosting the exhibition, which runs until March 31.
