Second documentary shows CNCFlora scientific expedition to Caatinga to investigate endangered flora and promote conservation actions
The production of the video documents the scientific, technical, and human effort involved in the mission.
Between March 25 and April 8, 2025, the National Center for Flora Conservation (CNCFlora) of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (JBRJ) conducted a scientific expedition to the most emblematic regions of the Caatinga: the Serra das Confusões and Serra da Capivara National Parks in the state of Piauí.
The mission focused on collecting primary data on endemic and endangered plant species, as well as systematically recording habitats and populations of species currently undergoing the extinction risk detection process conducted by CNCFlora.
The mini-documentary, released in two parts on JBRJ's social media and available in full on JBRJ's YouTube channel, reveals not only the surprising biodiversity of the Caatinga, but also the strategic importance of ensuring ecological connectivity between the two federal Conservation Units.
Together, these areas form the largest continuous ecological corridor in the Caatinga, essential for the survival of countless plant species.
The video production documents the scientific, technical, and human effort involved in the mission and highlights the role of science in formulating public policies to conserve Brazilian flora—especially in historically neglected biomes.
The expedition is part of the project “Conservation, Restoration, and Management Strategies for Biodiversity in the Caatinga, Pampa, and Pantanal (GEF Terrestrial),” coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, implemented by the IDB, and executed by Funbio.
The first episode of the series presents behind-the-scenes footage of the research, the challenges faced by the CNCFlora team, and the natural beauty that still remains preserved in the Pantanal. The scientific expedition took place in February this year in priority regions of the Pantanal biome in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The initiative, carried out in the context of the GEF Terrestrial Project, aimed to collect unprecedented data on endemic plant species that are threatened or under evaluation for extinction risk, as well as documenting their natural habitats and the ecological factors that affect their survival.
The series will consist of three episodes and will culminate in a final documentary that will bring together the main findings of the scientific journey. The content will be available on the official channels of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden and CNCFlora, in addition to being used in environmental education and social mobilization actions.
