SEA offers activities about the Caatinga for children and school groups
As part of the celebrations for Caatinga Day—April 23—the Environmental Education Service of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (SEA/JBRJ)
invites children and school groups to participate in the activity “Cordel in Lines: Isopography of the Caatinga,” an experience that brings together nature, culture, and creativity, from May 4 to 8.
The program begins with an interactive activity in the SEA’s Educational Laboratory, presenting the characteristics of this biome, its species, and its relationship with Northeastern culture—including cordel literature—in a lighthearted and engaging way.
Next, the children participate in the isopography workshop—a playful engraving technique inspired by woodcut, a traditional art form of Northeastern culture. They will create their own engravings based on species typical of the region, exploring shapes, textures, and creativity.
The group then heads out for a tour of the Arboretum along the “Caminhos da Caatinga” trail, passing through the Cactus Garden. Along the way, the children learn about species, discover interesting facts about cacti, their adaptations to the environment, and their connections to culture.
