Rio Botanical Garden hosts last tea ceremony of the year at Casa Pacheco Leão
The ceremony is accompanied by music.
This Friday (October 17), the last tea ceremony to be held this year at Casa Pacheco Leão will take place. The event, which presents tea preparation according to Chinese tradition, will be held in two sessions, at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. There are only 20 participants in each session. The public will be able to taste the drink. The ceremony will be presented by Professor Li Lu and accompanied by music from Professor Gao Chunhan, who will play the Chinese string instrument pipa. The attraction is free of charge. No ticket is required for the arboretum. Free tickets for the ceremony can be obtained at jbrj.eleventickets.com.
At the House, the public can visit the exhibition “Tea Route - botany, culture, and tradition,” which offers an immersion in the history of tea, exploring its origins, its trajectory around the world, and its role in connecting cultures, especially between Brazil and China. The collection brings together more than 100 pieces from different eras, styles, and origins.
The Rio Botanical Garden is part of this history, as it was the first place in Brazil where the cultivation of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) was introduced by Chinese brought by the Portuguese crown especially for this work in the early 19th century.
Casa Pacheco Leão is one of the most emblematic historic buildings in Rio de Janeiro's Botanical Garden. Listed by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), it reopened to the public in November last year after being closed for eight years. After undergoing architectural restoration, the space was reopened with the exhibition “Tea Route – Botany, Culture, and Tradition.” Initially scheduled to run until the end of October, the exhibition has been extended until December.
