Rio Botanical Garden celebrates 217 years with the launch of the Spice Trail this Friday (13/6)
Botanical Garden turns 217 on June 13th
On the day of its 217th anniversary, the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden is launching the Spice Trail this Friday (13/6). The trail invites visitors to embark on a sensory and historical journey along the paths that connected continents through spices - ancestral knowledge that crossed oceans, mainly from India, as well as Southeast Asia, the Americas and Africa. Valued for their intense flavors and striking aromas, spices have transformed cultures, cuisines and trade routes around the world.
Approximately one kilometer long and lasting about an hour, the Spice Trail passes 18 points of botanical and landscape interest, showing how nature and culture intertwine in each aroma and story. Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum), black pepper (Piper nigrum), turmeric (Curcuma longa), ginger (Zingiber officinale), rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), coffee (Coffea arabica), cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), lychee (Litchi chinensis), breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis), among others, are part of the trail.
Founded on June 13, 1808, the Rio Botanical Garden arose from the decision of the then Portuguese prince regent Dom João to install a gunpowder factory and a garden on the site to acclimatize plant species from other parts of the world. Today, it is one of the world's most respected scientific institutions in the fields of botany and biodiversity conservation. It also attracts thousands of visitors every year due to its lush landscaping, outdoor leisure and entertainment space and the presence of historical, cultural and archaeological monuments. In the cultivated area open to visitors, there are over 25,000 plants and more than 3,660 cultivated species.
The trail is free with admission to the arboretum. Departure will be at 1pm at the Visitor Center. In the event of rain, the trail will be postponed.
