On National Botany Day - April 17 : Come check out a science camp that recreates the experience of a field expedition
On April 17, in celebration of National Botany Day, visitors to the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden will have the opportunity to get an up-close look at the work of researchers on field expeditions. A botanical camp, featuring an interactive exhibition, will be set up on the lawn by Lago das Tartarugas from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., showcasing various pieces of equipment and materials used on scientific expeditions.
Among the items on display will be botanical presses, newspapers, and cardboard used for herbarium preparation, GPS devices, compasses, magnifying glasses, measuring tapes, field labels, note books, maps, personal protective equipment, cargo backpacks, and herbarium specimens —plant specimens collected by researchers, pressed, dried, and stored in herbariums for study and the dissemination of knowledge.
The activities will be led by analysts from the National Center for Flora Conservation (CNCFlora/JBRJ), who will explain the use of the materials, the procedures for collecting and recording data, and the preparation of the material to be transported and subsequently studied. They will also highlight the importance of this information for the conservation of Brazilian plant species threatened with extinction.
The initiative aims to bring the public closer to the experience of a botanical expedition through a fun, educational, and participatory approach.
Participation in the event is free. No admission ticket to the arboretum is required.
