Note of condolence: Prof. Henrique Lins de Barros
The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute deeply regrets the passing of Prof. Henrique Lins de Barros (1947–2025), which occurred on Sunday, September 28.
A physicist, biologist, writer, and science communicator, Henrique Gomes de Paiva Lins de Barros was a researcher at the Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF), director of the Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences, where he curated several exhibitions, and coordinated science communication projects.
At the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, he was director of the National School of Tropical Botany (ENBT) (2012–2013) and headed the then Museum of the Environment (2014–2015).
An internationally respected biophysicist for his studies of living beings in magnetic fields, he was also a great scholar of the life and work of Alberto Santos Dumont, having written the screenplay for the feature-length documentary “Santos Dumont, o homem pode voar” (Santos Dumont, Man Can Fly), by director Nelson Hoineff.
He also served as an accredited professor at the Carlos Chagas Institute and HCTE (UFRJ). During his long career, he was awarded the National Commendation for Scientific Merit, the 20 Years of Science Today Medal, and the Order of Aeronautical Merit, among others.
Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of our dear Henrique.
