Negritude em Foco Forum debates Quilombola Ecology on November 3
“Quilombola ecology” is the theme of the 4th edition of the Negritude em Foco Forum, which will feature biogeographer Rita Montezuma, from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), and anthropologist Rodrigo Bulamah, from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). The meeting will take place at the Botanical Garden Museum on November 3, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with free admission and live streaming on the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden YouTube channel.
Rita Montezuma has a degree in Biological Sciences (UERJ) and a master's and doctorate in Geography (UFRJ). She works in Ecology, Biogeography, and Political Ecology, focusing on environmental racism, quilombos, and black geographies. Co-founder of AFIDE/UFF and coordinator of the Quilombola Working Group, she is a member of the Ethnic-Racial Demands Committee. She is also an extension researcher with the Association of Remaining Quilombo Communities in the State of Rio de Janeiro (Acquilerj).
Rodrigo Bulamah, PhD from Unicamp and EHESS (France), researches the Caribbean, focusing on Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He is a professor at UERJ and a researcher at Residualab (UERJ) and the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton). His topics include ecology, race relations, and mobility. He is the author of Ruínas circulares (finalist for the 2025 Jabuti Award) and co-author of Rotas caribenhas (UFRJ Press).
The mediator for this edition of the Forum is Ulisses Carvalho de Souza, an agronomist with a master's degree in Plant Biology from UERJ (2024), responsible for the Environment, Agroecological System, and Gardening area at the Center for Socio-Environmental Responsibility (CRS) of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute (JBRJ).
The Biodiversity Forum is a program of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden dedicated to the appreciation of Afro-Brazilian cultures and the promotion of debates on memory, history, and the environment.
