Morro da Viração, in Niterói, gets a guide to forest restoration
Detail of the Guide cover
The Guide to Species for Forest Restoration at Morro da Viração, Niterói Municipal Natural Park - PARNIT, published by the Niterói Department of the Environment, Water Resources and Sustainability (SMARHS), is now available online. The Guide is the result of Bruno Torres Braga da Silva's master's thesis at the Biodiversity in Conservation Units Professional Postgraduate Program at the National School of Tropical Botany of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (ENBT/JBRJ). JBRJ researcher Bruno Coutinho Kurtz, who supervised the research, is a co-author of the publication.
The Guide provides information on each species, such as the popular name, scientific name, botanical family, extinction risk assessment, occurrence, ecological information, flowering and fruiting season, among others, as well as information for preparing seedlings, such as seed tolerance to drying, methods for collecting, preparing, sowing and germinating seeds, as well as botanical illustrations of the fruit and/or seeds.
The publication is thus a valuable tool for subsidizing the production of seedlings of essential species for restoration in PARNIT and other regions and conservation units in Niterói.
