On Wednesday (23/4), St. George's Day, the Maré do Amanhã Orchestra (OMA) will be performing in Rio de Janeiro's Botanical Garden. The concert will celebrate 50 years of friendship and trade relations between Brazil and China. The repertoire includes “Jasmine Flower”, “Aquarela do Brasil”, “My Chinese Hearth” and a medley by Tom Jobim, among others.
Created in Complexo da Maré, OMA is one of the most prominent social projects in Brazil, which promotes transformation through the teaching of music. In its 15 years of existence, more than 4,000 children and teenagers have been involved in the project, which, since 2023, has been considered intangible cultural heritage in Rio de Janeiro.
He has four international tours under his belt, as well as several awards and recognitions. Among the highlights are a performance for Pope Francis at the Vatican, a performance on the Favela Stage at Rock in Rio in 2019 and a parade at Marquês do Sapucaí with the drums of the Beija-Flor de Nilópolis samba school. In addition to performances alongside big names in music such as Alcione, Anitta and Ludmilla. In August last year, the orchestra went on an unprecedented ten-day tour of China.
The performance is free and starts at 1pm in front of the bust of Dom João.
