Mangroves are the topic of a lecture by oceanographer Mario Soares at the Biodiversity Forum on March 10
On March 10 at 2:30 p.m., the Botanical Garden Museum will host another edition of the Biodiversity Forum, an initiative dedicated to promoting discussions on key environmental issues. The event, held in the Multipurpose Room, will feature oceanographer Mario Soares, a professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and an expert on mangrove ecosystems.
With free admission and a live stream on the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden’s YouTube channel, the event—titled “Brazilian Mangroves: Where Waters Meet, Knowledge Converges, and Life Flows”—will offer 50 in-person seats, filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will receive a certificate.
With a bachelor’s and doctoral degree in Oceanography, Mario Soares is a professor at the School of Oceanography at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), where he coordinates the Center for Mangrove Studies (NEMA). He serves as a professor and advisor in the Graduate Programs in Environmental Studies at UERJ, in Oceanography at UERJ, and in Biodiversity in Conservation Units at the National School of Tropical Botany of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden.
The researcher is a member of the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change (OIMC/UERJ) and contributed to the development of the Ministry of the Environment’s National Plan for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Brazil’s Mangroves. He represents Brazil in the United Nations’ Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects, and is a member of the IUCN expert group developing the Red List of Ecosystem Assessments.
Soares also serves as a member of the Advisory Councils for the Guaratiba Biological and Archaeological Reserve, the Guapimirim Environmental Protection Area, the Guanabara Ecological Station, and the Central Fluminense Atlantic Forest Mosaic.
Held monthly at the Botanical Garden Museum, the Biodiversity Forum is coordinated by a council of experts from the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute (JBRJ) and promotes discussions on essential environmental topics. The event is aimed at experts, researchers, students, and other interested parties.
