On the border between the Serra do Mar mountain range and the Baixada Fluminense (lowlands) lies the Reserva Biológica do Tinguá - Rebio Tinguá (Tinguá Biological Reserve), whose 26,260 hectares encompass six municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro: Nova Iguaçu, Duque de Caxias, Petrópolis, Miguel Pereira, Queimados and Japeri. The largest biological reserve in the state and third largest in the southeast region, it has registered, to date, 1311 plant species, now listed in the Brazilian Catalog of Conservation Units Plants.
The Plant List of Rebio Tinguá, published in March 2023, shows the great diversity existing in this Conservation Unit. There are 1140 records of Angiosperms from 122 families, with Myrtaceae - the family of guava, jambo and pitanga - being the most numerous. Among ferns and lycophytes, there are 170 species from 24 families. This UC also has a Gimnosperm, Podocarpus sellowii Klotzsch ex Endl.
Rebio Tinguá is part of the Serra do Mar Biodiversity Corridor and the Central Mosaic of the Fluminense Atlantic Forest. It was created in 1989 to protect an important portion of this biome and the hydrographic basins of the Guanabara Bay, Sepetiba Bay, and Paraíba do Sul River, as well as other natural resources. Located in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, this UC has forest formations impacted by the proximity of urban centers, and the most preserved are found in the most humid areas.
The list of the Rebio Tinguá has 69 species of plants classified as endangered, three of which are Critically Endangered (CR), 37 Endangered (EN), and 29 Vulnerable (VU), according to the assessment of the National Center for Conservation of Flora, of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro (CNCFlora/JBRJ). The list also indicates 12 species with insufficient data (DD).
The collections of the botanists Haroldo Cavalcante de Lima and Lana Sylvestre, deposited in the herbarium of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro (RB) and the herbarium of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (RBR), and the collections funded by the project "PPBio Mata Atlântica - Southeast Center" were of great importance for the elaboration of the list.
The Catalog of Plants of the Conservation Units of Brazil also provides an image bank with 42 photographs of species collected in Rebio Tinguá.
