The Catalog of Plants in Brazil's Conservation Units has just received the list of plants in the Córrego Grande Biological Reserve (RBCG), a unit located in the north of Espírito Santo, on the border with Bahia. A total of 630 plant species have been documented in the RBCG, of which 622 are native to Brazil.
Fabaceae and Myrtaceae are the families with the highest number of species listed in this reserve, where 38 endangered species are also recorded, 22 of which are classified as Endangered (EN), 14 as Vulnerable (VU) and 2 as Critically Endangered (CR). In addition, there are 2 species with insufficient data (DD). These figures show the importance of the RBCG for the conservation of the flora of the Atlantic Rainforest.
The RBCG was created in 1989 and covers an area of 1,1504.80 hectares, where there are important remnants of the Atlantic Forest. It is managed by ICMBio's Integrated Management Center (NGI) in São Mateus, which is also responsible for the Córrego do Veado Biological Reserve and the Rio Preto National Forest.
The list is the result of Maria Silvia Carvalho Neta's master's research at the National School of Tropical Botany of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (ENBT/JBRJ), with the collaboration of researchers from the SAMES Herbarium (UFES), in partnership with ICMBio, the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro and the JBRJ. The publication also includes an Image Bank with photos of 84 species from the RBCG.
