Lecture Presents a New Methodological Approach to Biodiversity Beyond Geography

Professor Bruno Vilela de Moraes e Silva, PhD, from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), will give the lecture “Rethinking Biodiversity Beyond Geography: An Integrated Approach Between Environment, Function, and Space” on June 11 (Thursday), at 4 p.m., at the auditorium of the Scientific Research Directorate (Dipeq) of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. The event is organized by Dipeq in partnership with the Graduate Program in Botany of the National School of Tropical Botany (PPGBot/ENBT/JBRJ).

The researcher will discuss new perspectives for understanding large-scale biodiversity patterns. Moving beyond the traditional approach centered on the geographic distribution of species, the presentation will integrate concepts from macroecology, macroevolution, and functional ecology to propose a new theoretical and methodological framework aimed at investigating the evolutionary processes that shape species distribution and the diversity of life on the planet.

Bruno Vilela holds a degree in Biology and a master’s degree in Biological Diversity and Conservation in the Tropics from the Federal University of Alagoas. He earned his PhD in Ecology and Evolution from the Federal University of Goiás, including a cotutelle period at the University of Alcalá (Spain). He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis (USA). Since 2018, he has been an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Bahia, where he teaches courses in ecology and statistics, and served as coordinator of the Graduate Program in Ecology: Theory, Application and Values between 2021 and 2023. He is also a researcher at the National Institute of Science and Technology in Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity Conservation. His research focuses mainly on biological and cultural macroecology and macroevolution. He also develops statistical tools to support research and teaching in the R programming environment.
