Lecture on February 19 discusses new methods for documenting botanical knowledge by traditional communities
On Wednesday, February 19, the Thematic Collection of Medicinal Plants at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden will host Dr. Guillaume Odonne, senior researcher and Director of Research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)/LEEISA - French Guiana. The guest will talk about “The use of photographic identification and digital methods to help local communities document their own botanical knowledge”. The lecture starts at 10am.
The identification of plants, following the system of Linnaeus, is fundamental in ethnobotany, making it possible to compare different cultures and knowledge. Traditionally, ethnobotanists collect plant samples for identification and storage in herbaria. However, this method can present challenges and limitations. In this talk, Dr. Guillaume Odonne presents a new approach to ethnobotanical research: the use of photographic vouchers and digital repositories as an alternative to traditional herbarium specimens. He discusses how the increasing quality and accessibility of smartphone cameras, apps such as Pl@ntnet and iNaturalist, and artificial intelligence techniques for photo identification can revolutionize data collection and analysis in field studies.
Dr. Odonne explores the advantages and challenges of this new methodology, establishing guidelines for the use of photographic vouchers in different research contexts. He argues that while the collection of herbarium specimens remains important, photographic vouchers represent a valid, complementary method that in some cases can assist in plant identification. In this regard, the researcher published an article in the Journal of Ethnobiology
You can register for the lecture until 4pm on February 17, 2025 using this form.
