Lecture explores phylogenomic methods for understanding evolutionary mechanisms in the tropics
Professor Liming Cai, Ph.D., from the Department of Biology at the University of Florida, will deliver a lecture titled “Phylogenomic methods for evolutionary mechanisms in the tropics” at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden on Friday, June 5, at 10 a.m., in the Auditorium of the Scientific Research Directorate (Dipeq).
The tropics are home to most of the Earth’s plant species diversity and biomass. However, the patterns and processes underlying the origin and maintenance of this extraordinary biodiversity are not yet fully understood. The researcher will discuss the natural history of groups of flowering plants, such as Malpighiales and Fabaceae, with a special focus on the various biotic and abiotic processes in the tropics. By integrating phylogenomics and comparative genomics, it is possible to address some of the most complex phylogenetic relationships in the plant tree of life, reconstruct biogeographic histories in tropical regions, and identify key morphological and chemical innovations that have shaped diversification.
