On Tuesday (3/6), the president of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, Sergio Besserman Vianna, received the judge of the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice (TJRJ), Elton Leme, a specialist in environmental law. On the agenda were future partnerships in the area of socio-environmental responsibility and sustainability.
- Our partnership will bear very important fruit. On the one hand, we have the Botanical Garden, with its knowledge and its contribution to the preservation of biodiversity. On the other, the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice, with its duty to defend and preserve the environment for present and future generations, acting in defense of compliance with the Federal Constitution, which states that everyone has the right to an ecologically balanced environment. It's more than a legal partnership, it's an ethical one,” said Judge Elton Leme.
The president of the Botanical Garden emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two institutions.
- Today we face the challenge of the global climate crisis, and the Botanical Garden's mission is to preserve biodiversity and support public policies in defense of the environment. We will only achieve good results in tackling this challenge with great social participation and the exercise of citizenship. This partnership will certainly result in practical actions, because we are here bringing together biodiversity and citizenship - said Sergio Besserman.
The meeting was also attended by assistant judge Paula Feteira Soares and the secretary general of the TJRJ's Responsibility Secretariat, Carlos Eduardo Menezes da Costa. Also present for the JBRJ were chief prosecutor Alexandre Coelho, the director of Knowledge, Environment and Technology, Marcia Faraco, and the president's Institutional Affairs advisor, Renata Bley.
After the meeting, the delegation toured the arboretum and visited the facilities of the Center for Social and Environmental Responsibility, where they were welcomed by coordinator Deborah Tavares Marinho.
