JBRJ participates in the III Rio-São Paulo Botanical Conference
The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute is one of the organizers of the III Rio-São Paulo Botanical Conference, which the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) is holding until Saturday, July 12, with the theme Climate Change and the New Path of Plants.
This Friday, July 11, JBRJ researchers and ENBT professors took part in three round tables at the event. Round table 3 - In search of the lost flora: the signs of disappearance pointed out by botanists, featured talks by researchers Massimo Bovini, Eduardo Pinheiro Fernandez and UFRJ professor Lana Silvestre. Marcus Nadruz Coelho (JBRJ) was the mediator.
Massimo spoke about the flora at risk on Rio de Janeiro's coastal islands. He talked about the conditions that can influence the diversity of species on an island, the major threats to these ecosystems and also some of the species found on Rio's coastal islands. Eduardo Fernandez's talk presented an overview of the state of conservation of Brazilian flora, the challenges and main conservation actions that are part of the scope of the National Center for Flora Conservation (CNCFlora/JBRJ).
Panel 4, mediated by Claudia Franca Barros (JBRJ), was dedicated to the theme “Medicinal plants and traditional knowledge: native flora and health”. Researcher Viviane Kruel (JBRJ) discussed medicinal plants used traditionally in the Atlantic Forest. "We have a history in the Atlantic Forest of great resistance - of people and knowledge. It's impressive," said Viviane. The panel also included professors Selma Ribeiro de Paiva and Ana Joffily Coutinho, both from UFF.
The theme of panel 5 was Plant adaptation and ecosystem resilience to climate change. Marinez Ferreira de Siqueira, director of the National School of Tropical Botany (ENBT/JBRJ), spoke about the expected impacts of climate change on plants. The panel was mediated by Luiz Fernando Duarte de Moraes, from Embrapa, and also included speakers Fátima Aparecida Arcanjo (UFU) and Jerônimo Boelsums Barreto Sansevero (UFRRJ and ENBT/JBRJ).
The João Carlos Silva Responsibility Center (CRS/JBRJ) was also present at the III Conference with the presentation of posters by high school science initiation students.
