Indigenous Trail is the highlight of April at the Rio Botanical Garden
Friday Trails at JBRJ
Indigenous Peoples' Day is celebrated on the 19th of this month. To celebrate the date, the attraction of the Friday Trails in April at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden is the Indigenous Trail. The free guided walking tour will be offered on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th, starting at 10am.
The Indigenous Trail is represented by 17 plant species cultivated in the arboretum, such as the Victoria amazonica, the Bixa orellana, the Euterpe oleraceae, among others. These species have been used and managed for hundreds of years by various indigenous peoples in Brazil.
The main objective of the trail is to raise awareness of the importance of recognizing, conserving, protecting and perpetuating indigenous knowledge about the use of plants. When taking part in the tour, visitors will receive information about the species.
The seeds and underground rhizome of the Victoria regia, for example, are edible. The crushed seeds of the annatto are used as a condiment and food coloring. The indigenous people use them to make red dye for body paint and fabrics. Açaí fruits are used to make food and drinks. The leaves are used to make baskets, brooms and roofs. The stipe (stem) is used in construction, the seeds in handicrafts and the oil from the seeds in cooking and cosmetics.
