In honor of Charles Darwin, a trail in Rio's Botanical Garden presents the evolution of plants
In February, the Friday Trails program presents, at 10 a.m., the Evolutionary Trail, a free guided activity in honor of British naturalist Charles Darwin, author of On the Origin of Species. Exceptionally, the Trail will also be offered on Thursday, February 12, the date of Darwin's birth in 1809. On Thursday, the time will be 9 a.m., as part of a special program.
During the Evolutionary Trail, visitors will learn about the different adaptation strategies developed by plants over hundreds of thousands of years, understanding how these processes gave rise to the enormous diversity of species that exist today.
During the tour of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden arboretum, from mosses and ferns to orchids and cacti, 14 species with characteristics of different stages of plant evolution on the planet are observed. Evolution deals with processes in which species undergo random mutations that favor their adaptation to the environment and the changes that occur in it.
Participation in the trail is free, with only the entrance fee to the arboretum being charged. Tours depart every Friday from the Visitor Center.
