Historical Trail is December's highlight at Rio's Botanical Garden
In the last month of the year, the free guided tour offered to the public by the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden is the Historical Tour. With more than 50 points of interest, the tour presents the rich collection of botanical species, artistic and architectural monuments of the bicentennial institution.
The Casa dos Pilões Archaeological Site Museum, the gate and ruins of the former Royal Gunpowder Factory, the Fine Arts gate, the Karl Glasl cave, the medicinal plant collection, the rose garden, the Japanese garden, the Amazon region, among others, are included in the tour.
Founded on June 13, 1808, by Dom João, the Rio Botanical Garden arose from the decision of the then Portuguese prince regent to install a gunpowder factory and a garden for the acclimatization of plant species from other parts of the world. Today, it stands out as one of the most respected scientific institutions in the world, housing more than 25,000 plants and approximately 3,600 species in its cultivated area.
The Historical Trail will be guided by the Visitor Center team and will take place every Friday. The tour is free, with only the arboretum entrance fee charged. No registration is required; just show up and participate.
