Guided tours feature Atlantic Forest species at the Rio Botanical Garden
The itinerary includes iconic species such as jatoba, paineira, and purple ipê.
The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden invites the public to immerse themselves in the richness of the Atlantic Forest during its “Friday Trails” in May. Along the route, iconic species such as jatoba, paineira, purple ipê, chichá, vinhático, imperial bromeliad, and brazilwood reveal stories, interesting facts, and the importance of one of the most diverse biomes on the planet.
The Atlantic Forest Trail winds through the arboretum on a guided tour lasting about an hour and a half, showcasing 27 species cultivated on the grounds. Tours take place on May 8, 15, 22, and 29, at two times—10 a.m. and 2 p.m. On Atlantic Forest Day, celebrated on May 27, there will be a special tour departing at 2 p.m. The meeting point is the Visitor Center.
The Atlantic Forest biome is one of the world’s richest in species diversity, with 19,980 species of plants, algae, and fungi known to science, according to Flora and Funga of Brazil. Of this total, 5,613 have already been assessed by the National Center for Flora Conservation (CNCFlora/JBRJ), with 2,171 classified as threatened with extinction (CR – critically endangered; EN – endangered; VU – vulnerable).
Guided by the Visitor Center staff, the Friday Trails are free and require no prior registration—just come and join in. The only fee is the admission ticket to the arboretum, which can be purchased at the ticket office (in cash or by Pix) or online at jbrj.eleventickets.com using Pix or a credit card.
