Fabio Scarano is ENBT's guest for the Inaugural Class of 2024

"Which 'nature' are we talking about?" is the title of the 2024 Inaugural Lecture at the National School of Tropical Botany (ENBT/JBRJ). The lecture will be given by Professor Fabio Rubio Scarano on Monday, March 18, at 11am, in the Graziela Maciel Barroso Auditorium.

Fabio Scarano is a full professor at the Unesco Chair for Literacy in Futures, a partnership between the Museum of Tomorrow (Institute for Development and Management) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where he has worked since 1993 as a full professor of Ecology. With a degree in Forest Engineering from the University of Brasilia and a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of St. Andrews (Scotland), he was, from 2007 to 2009, Director of Scientific Research at the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, where he had done a post-doctoral internship.

Scarano is a member of the Linnean Society of London and was a visiting professor at the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany (2002) and the University of Minnesota, USA (2003). He coordinated the Ecology and Environment Area at CAPES/MEC (2005-2011), was the lead author of the Brazilian (PBMC; 2011-2014) and Intergovernmental Panels on Climate Change (IPCC; 2011-2014) and coordinating author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Environmental Services (IPBES; 2015-2018). 

He was also co-founder and general coordinator of the Brazilian Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BPBES; 2015-2019) and was a member of the board of leaders of the NGO Conservation International, where he was executive director for Brazil (2009-2011) and senior vice-president for the Americas (2011-2015). He was also executive director of the Brazilian Foundation for Sustainable Development (2015-2018). He has won two Jabuti Literature Prizes in the Natural Sciences category: second place in 2013 for his book "Brazilian Biomes: Portraits of a Plural Country"; and first place in 2015 for his book "Atlantic Forest: A History of the Future".
