Ethnobotany and agroecology: traditional knowledge and experiences from the Rio de Janeiro countryside under discussion at the Rio Botanical Garden

The 4th edition of Ethnobotany with Open Doors (EPA) welcomes researcher Mateus Vieira da Cunha Salim (ENBT/JBRJ). The event will take place on August 27, and its theme will be “Experiences in the Countryside and the Dialogue of Knowledge: Agroecology, Ethnobotany, and Traditional Practices in Rural Rio de Janeiro.”

Mateus Salim, a master farmer, will discuss his experiences in rural areas of the interior of the state of Rio de Janeiro, fostering a dialogue of knowledge between ethnobotany and agroecology, and addressing concepts from these fields.

Salim conducts research in ethnobotany and agroecology, focusing on the interactions between human societies, biodiversity, and traditional agricultural systems. His work encompasses the study of medicinal plants, family farming, agroforestry systems, and biocultural conservation, combining approaches that value local knowledge with quantitative methods and data analysis.

The researcher is also active in education, extension, scientific outreach, and consulting, promoting the integration of science and traditional knowledge to strengthen communities and foster sustainability in rural areas.

The event will take place starting at 2:30 p.m. at the JBRJ’s Thematic Collection of Medicinal Plants. Registration for the in-person event is free and can be completed via the online form. Space is limited to 50 participants.

The lecture will also be streamed live on Google Meet.
