A success in 2025, when it was launched in celebration of the 217th anniversary of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, the Spice Trail returns to the Friday Trails program in January 2026. The first outing takes place this Friday, January 2, at 10 a.m. The trail is guided and free of charge, with only the admission fee for the Garden Arboretum being charged.
Valued for their intense flavors and striking aromas, spices have transformed cultures, cuisines, and trade routes around the globe. On the Arboretum trail, visitors embark on a sensory and historical journey through the paths that connected continents through ancestral knowledge about these species, which crossed oceans, coming mainly from India, as well as Southeast Asia, the Americas, and Africa.
Approximately one kilometer long and lasting about an hour, the Spice Trail passes through 18 points of botanical and scenic interest, showing how nature and culture intertwine. Clove (Syzygium aromaticum), black pepper (Piper nigrum), turmeric (Curcuma longa), ginger (Zingiber officinale), rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), coffee (Coffea arabica), cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), lychee (Litchi chinensis), breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis), among others, punctuate the walk with surprising aromas and stories.
The trail will be offered on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th January. Departures are at 10 a.m. from the Visitor Center. No registration is required; just show up and participate. Tickets for the Garden can be purchased at the box office or at jbrj.eleventickets.com.
In case of rain, the trail will be canceled.
