Director of the National Institute of the Atlantic Forest is the guest at the next Biodiversity Forum
On Friday the 23rd, the Botanical Garden Museum will host Sérgio Lucena Mendes, director of the National Institute of the Atlantic Forest (INMA), for a special edition of the Biodiversity Forum. Speaking about the need for and ways of restoring the Atlantic Forest, the event celebrates Biodiversity Day (22) and is part of the JBRJ's Atlantic Forest Week program, as well as keeping alive the dialogue initiated by the exhibition “Mata Atlântica: in-finitos encantos”, on display until September 30 at the site.
Restoring the Atlantic Forest is essential to recovering millions of degraded hectares, conserving biodiversity and maintaining ecosystem services. There are various ways of promoting restoration, from active reforestation to natural regeneration without direct intervention,” explains Luicena, who intends to show that restoring the biome needs to integrate science, economics and social participation, making it a multidisciplinary challenge.
As well as being the director of INMA, Sérgio Lucena Mendes is also a full professor at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES). A biologist who graduated from UFES, he holds a master's degree in Ecology from UnB and a doctorate from Unicamp. He works in teaching, research and extension, with a focus on the Conservation Biology of the Atlantic Forest, especially the conservation of mammals, primates and the relationship between biodiversity and health.
The event is free, subject to capacity, and will be broadcast live on JBRJ's YouTube channel. The aim is to reach specialists, researchers, students and other interested parties. A certificate of participation will be issued to both in-person and online audiences.
