The National Biodiversity Commission (Conabio), a body linked to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA), will have 60 days to analyze proposals to include and exclude species of fauna and flora from the national list of endangered species. The proposed update was one of the points on the agenda of the 74th ordinary meeting of the collegiate body, held on April 2 and 3 in Brasilia.
The changes were presented by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) and the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute (JBRJ), after evaluations with groups of specialists who considered the risk of extinction of species of Brazilian fauna and flora.
The proposal also included the analysis of 24 species of fungi by the JBRJ. This will be the first time that a country has a specific list for this group.
After the 60-day deadline, any considerations presented by Conabio will be assessed by the MMA, with the support of experts. The Ministry's assessment will be presented at a Conabio meeting in June. Once approved, the new National Lists of Endangered Species will be published in the Federal Official Gazette.
During the meeting, Conabio also approved the commission's internal regulations, a document that will guide how the body operates. A technical chamber was also set up to monitor the National Program for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Brazil's Mangroves (ProManguezal). The initiative defines guidelines, implementation axes and lines of action for the conservation, recovery and sustainable use of mangroves in the country.
The meeting was attended in person and online by members of various sectors of government and society, such as academia, environmental organizations, the productive sector, social movements, indigenous peoples and traditional peoples and communities.
